Instructions:
Squirl is a light synth/pattern
generator hybrid program. It's sort of
like Jeff Minters' Colourspace and
Trip-a-tron programs, but the emphasis
is less on the actual precise mouse
movements, and more on the overall way
in which the mouse is moved.
This means that it takes less (in fact,
hardly any) effort to create *amazing*
flowing and constantly changing
patterns which you can stare at for
hours. &-)
The mouse is moved about in whatever
way you feel like - to music or
whatever - and patterns made up of dots
are drawn across the screen, based on
the mouse's movements.
The program does not follow the mouse
exactly, but analyses and processes the
incoming mouse information to produce
more fluid designs from it.
For instance, if the mouse is moved
rapidly, with lots of jerks, the
pattern will become more <insert
appropriate word to describe a "fast
active pattern" here!>. Slower, smooth
flowing motions produce much more
relaxing displays.
The best thing to do is experiment -
move the mouse in tiny circles, slowly
increasing in size...move the mouse in
long horizontal or vertical
sweeps...try to draw faces...whatever!
DO IT!!!
Tips:
Turn up the brightness on your monitor
and turn off the lights in your room!!!
VDI drawing routines are used, so if
things are running a bit slowly, using
a screen accelerator will help.
Try it with a 'screen magnifier' on!
A mouse accelerator program can also be
used to give a more sensitive display.
Controls:
on Mouse:
Move the mouse about! Mouse speed and
activity affects the patterns produced.
Hold left button to cause a general
increase in activity.
Hold right button to generally decrease
activity.
Hold both buttons to have a normalising
effect.
on Keyboard:
<Return> selects chaser mode... off,
close, loose or active. (close at high
speeds, loose at slow speeds)
<Escape> reset everything to defaults.
<Space> strobe.
<Z> strobe and clear screen.
<\> set autostrobe mode.
<1-9> set trail length.
<Q-O> (top row of keys) set chaser
length.
<0> set chaser to be 25% of current
trail length.
<[> set trail to be 400% of current
chaser length.
on Keypad:
<4> Toggle top left reflection on/off.
<5> Toggle top right reflection on/off.
<1> Toggle lower left reflection
on/off.
<2> Toggle lower right reflection
on/off.

Squirl was created, designed and coded
by TiM CHaPmaN of VRC. Currently it is
PD, but if any magazines etc. want to
include it on a coverdisk or whatever,
I would appreciate it if they would
contact me first to let me know.
Please keep both SQUIRL.TOS and
SQUIRL.TXT together and unaltered.
The program is continually under
development, and ANY ideas for further
improvements will be accepted (and
